A number of items in Museum Victoria's collection relate to the Cardbox Software used for the Museum's Photoarchive Project. The items are catalogued as HT4452 - 4458, 4468, 4469, 4492, 4493.
Cardbox was used to catalogue and index photographic material and direct the user to the appropriate microfiche to be viewed on a reader (The microfiche is in TRIM). The Project experimented with digital imaging. This was not taken up as research indicated the the acquistion resolution of images was not acceptable - it would be regarded as extremely low in 2003. A computer and scanner were donated by Canon. MV updated to Cardbox Plus - this was used with videodisc using LaserM - a program developed locally by Savage Software. LaserM was for text - it was the link between the software and the videodisc. LaserM was also used for the Esso Archive. The project then experimented with Picture Cardbox which combined text and images. This was not used as it did not have the capacity, retrieval response or the resolution. The next program tried was Cardbox for Windows. This was evaluated and then used with the Laurie Richards collection. It used digital images. The donor used Cardbox (DOS program) until he left the Museum in 2003.
In WOPOP issue #9 1984 (in Museum Library), there is an article describing the proposed methodoilogy for the Photoarchive project once it was to be implemented. Cardbox was the computer sofware that was finally selected on the basis of the criteria descibed in the methodology.
