Summary

In 1857, Surveyor-General of the colony, Andrew Clarke captured the falcon in his home near Merri Creek. He was a supporter of the museum and helped in its establishment. This falcon features in Museums Victoria's Melbourne Story exhibition.

Many of the museum's early specimens were donated by members of the public. This grey falcon (Falco hypoleucos) came from the Surveyor-General of the colony, Andrew Clarke, in 1857.

Clarke had captured the falcon in his home near Merri Creek, when it flew into the kitchen and tried to make off with a chicken. Clarke was a noted supporter of the Museum, having initiated its formation in 1854.

Many of the objects in the Natural History Collection, although collected for reasons of scientific significance, reveal fascinating stories from colonial Victoria.
