The Apple Company took a calculated risk putting major resources into the development of a new operating system OSX for the Macintosh. The new system was faster and more secure than previous systems because it was based on the UNIX operating system. This was the first time that a UNIX operating system had a Graphic User Interface. Apple also ensured that software from previous systems could continue to be used. Many software developers prefer the UNIX based OSX system to facilitate the development of software. The desktop oriented version of MacOSX 10.0 was released in March 2001, but a server version was released in 1999.
