Victorian Mosque Open Day 2019:

On 17 March 2019, as part of the Victorian State Government's Cultural Diversity Week activities, Mosque Open Day was held in mosques across Victoria.

The event was scheduled by coincidence one day after the mosque attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand on 16 March 2019. Many people who visited mosques on that day appeared to be making a particular effort to attend a mosque as a show of support and solidarity for the Muslim community.

In Brunswick, flowers were laid at the IISCA Brunswick Islamic Centre at 31 Edward Street Brunswick and references made by Muslim leaders to the Christchurch events and appreciation expressed to the visitors for attending.

Mosque Open Day Bags:

These bags were distributed at mosques around Victoria to visitors as part of Victorian Mosque Open Day events. The bag in the Museum's collection (HT 56034) was collected by a curator during a visit to the IISCA Brunswick Islamic Centre which offered an open day event with talks, food and play activities for children.

The bag contains 10 flyers and information brochures about the Islamic religion. The titles include: 'A Brief Illustrated Guide to Understanding Islam', 'Misconceptions about Islam', 'The Hijab', 'Islam Q & A', 'Introduction to Islam', 'Australian Muslims: Here Are the Facts', 'National Imams Consultative Forum. An Australian Muslim Perspective on Some Key Contemporary Concerns' (2015), 'Islam in Australia-Fact Sheet', 'Glossary of Terms for Tours', and 'Islamic Museum of Australia'.
