In early 2000, American Western Arms Incorporated (AWA) bought out the Italian manufacturer of western replica firearms, Armi San Marco. While production continued in Italy, new quality standards were set in place to improve on the former company's copy of popular western arms.

While the firearms continue to be manufactured in Italy, the guns are shipped to the United States for their final proofing, undergoing final assembly, in-house inspection, proofing of the barrels, and packing.

AWA also has a sister company, Classic Old West Styles (COWS), which has been offering period-authentic clothing and gun leather to the Cowboy Action market.
