Son of George James and Annie J. Greenshields of 19 Napier Street, Ballarat, George Jerrard Greenshields served in the 7th Brigade of the Australian Field Artillery (service # 1536). He was mentioned in dispatches, including a dispatch on 18 September 1917, which said of him 'Has displayed exceptional ability, courage, and devotion to duty in the Field. He has served with the Brigage since its formation, and the Battyer to which he belonged - until recently appointed Adjutant - material benefitted by his qualities of leadership and ability. Under heavy shellfire he has displayed the greatest coolness, and has invariably set a splended example to his Unit in this regard'.

Greenshields was 22 years old when he was killed in action 1 April 1918. He was buried at 833 Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France (grave reference # VII. A. 25.). He was cited in the London Gazette on 28 May 1918, page 6201, position 23 and in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 24 October 1918, page 2055, position 114.
