Henry Marcus Clark was born in Liverpool, England, and migrated to Victoria in 1880. He soon moved to Sydney, and within three years of arriving had established a small drapery shop in Newtown. The shop prospered, and by 1902 had become a public company. Clark married a native-born Australian, Martha Annie Day.

Clark's son, Reginald, carried on the company after his father's death in 1913. Reginald had a strong interest in numismatics and became president of the Australian Numismatic Society. His Australasian token collection was of international reknown.
