John Jacques Barre was Graveur General at the Paris Mint from 1842 until his death. Apprenticed to Thoilier, he made his first appearance at the Salon in 1819 with success. Barre cut the coin portrait for Louis Philippe in 1834 and had his patterns chosen for the coinage of the Third Empire by Napoleon III. He also engraved the plates for the French notes from 1841-43. He was involved in the Mudie series of medals, and also executed the dies for the Greek coinage in the late 1860s early 1870s.
Barre was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1834.
