The Military Historical Society of Australia was established it 1957. It aims to encourage and pursue research of Australian military history, Australian military customs and traditions, Australian military dress, arms and equipment, and the military history of Australia's allies and foes. It publishes a quarterly journal, Sabretache, which includes articles, book reviews, letters and queries, and addresses all aspects of the history of the services.

Membership of the Society is open to all persons interested in Australian military history, either with our without a service background. Members may elect to join a branch or become a corresponding member if they cannot or do not wish to take part in branch activities. The Society is administered by a Federal Council located in Canberra. Branches operate in Brisbane, Canberra, Albury-Wodonga, Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and Perth.
