Raymond Boultwood Ewers was born in Wyalong, New South Wales, in 1917. He studied commercial art at Melbourne Working Men's College (now RMIT) in 1936-40, and assisted Leslie Bowles with the King George V and Monash Memorial statues 1938-41. He was official war artist of the south Pacific region in 1943-45, and later participated in the construction of dioramas and sculptural work for the Australian War Memorial. His work included the monolithic bronze soldier for the Hall of Memory. He also designed recreated Gilbert's ANZAC Light Horse Memorial at Port Said, damaged during the 1956 Suez Crisis; casts were then erected in Albany, WA and Anzac Parade, Canberra. He also designed the ANZAC 50th Anniversary medal c.1966 [eg. NU 36503]. He died on 5 June 1988
