The Calvert family was prominent in the Ararat region. Calvert Railway Station in the Shire of Ararat was named after the family. Calvert is also a suburb of Ararat.

Tatyoon Cemetery (near Ararat) records a Samuel Calvert, born in Ireland on 17 July 1844 and died in Clea Hill, Maroona on 24 November 1923, aged 79. He was husband of Agnes and father of Thomas, and was a Justice of the Peace.

A medal was issued in commemoration of the Victorian Juvenile Industrial Exhibition in 1888, naming S. Calvert as Shire President of Ararat (NU 35428). A medal naming Calvert as Shire President was also issued in 1887, for Queen Victoria's jubilee (Car.1887/74) and 1897, for Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee (Car.1897/15 and 1897/47). In 1911 he was again named as Shire President, on a medal issued for the coronation of George V and Queen Mary (Car.1911/6).
