Thomas Aitken won a silver medal at the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition for porter (NU 35708). Porter is a dark brown, bitter beer brewed from charred or browned malt.

A.& T. Aitken of the Victoria Parade Brewery, East Melbourne, entered two hogsheads of ale, a case of bottle ale, a case of bottled stout, and quarter-casks of rum, whisky, spirits of wine and methylated spirits in the 1884 Victorian Intercolonial Exhibition of Wine, Grain, Fruit etc.(Official Catalogue, p.26). They won a silver prize [NU 33521].
