A silver prize medal was awarded to the Victoria Varnish Company for its display of varnish at the 1873 Victorian Exhibition. The medal was awarded for four entries in Class II - Drysaltery: #609, 'Varnishes for various purposes, and panel showing the same'; #610: Anti-fouling composition, for ships' bottoms, etc'; #611: 'Japan paint, for various purposes'; and #612: 'Case showing names of ships and steamers painted by the process' (Official Record, p.48). The company also advertised in the Official Record (p.181), listing their address as 36 Market Street, Melbourne, and advertising their varnishes for 'coachbuilders, house painters and decorators, cabinet makers, etc'. Borthwick and Auld were the managers of the company.
