Disorders of emotion have been historically referred to as nervous breakdown, manic depression and hysteria.
These illnesses were treated with visits to spas, where patients were immersed in calming waters. This was a particularly popular treatment in the 19th century.
More intrusive treatments were introduced in the 20th century, in the hope of curing emotional disorders. These included medications and shock therapies.
