Hugh Vivian Taylor was born in 1894, he started practice as an Architect in Victoria, Australia during 1923 and in acoustics in 1928. The arrival of "talking pictures" in Australia in 1929 required acceptable acoustic conditions to ensure satisfactory reproduction of the sound. From 1930 to 1941 he acted as consultant for at least 434 theatres and public halls.

Other projects that Hugh Vivian Taylor was consulting architect and acoustician to include: the establishment of a reverberation chamber in Melbourne in 1931; acoustic adviser for the South Australian Government during the completion of the Houses of Parliament in Adelaide between 1935 and 1940; and consultant to the Australian Broadcasting Commission.

He became a Life Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 1971 and was elected the first Fellow of the Australian Acoustical Society in 1972.

Hugh Vivian Taylor died in 1981.
