Stock and Land is a Melbourne-based weekly livestock industry publication, the first edition of which was issued on 1 July 1914. The paper is still in circulation providing a wide range of news and views of concern to those involved with the pastoral, agricultural, horticultural and wool growing industries, and related areas of machinery and property trading. The Stock & Land Newmarket office was located in the main administration building, and employed only three dedicated reporters from 1914 until the closure of the Saleyards.

Stock & Land was published on Wednesdays for many years and then later switched to Thursdays to include the young cattle sales held on Wednesdays. The format used for the Newmarket reports did not change appreciably for many years. Throughout most of the reporting period subjective descriptions such as 'chunky' and 'junky' painted a word picture of the cattle sold.
