Summary

Sample of Terminalia arjuna (Combretaceae) bark. This was collected and prepared by T.N.Mukharji as part of his work for the Indian Botanical Gardens. It was donated to the Museum by the Indian Government, Calcutta in 1887. Terminalia arjuna is a medicinal plant widely used by Ayurvedic (Ancient Indian Science of Healing) physicians for its curative properties in organic/functional heart problems including angina, hypertension and deposits in arteries. According to Ayurvedic texts it also very useful in the treatment of any sort of pain due a fall, ecchymosis, spermatorrhoea and sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhoea.

Physical Description

Two pieces of dried bark housed in a plastic bag. A Museum label is included in the bag, on which the name of the specimen and collection are handwritten in black ink.
