Also known as a rucksack. This type of bag was generally carried with a shoulder strap.
The bag was used by Private John Davis, service number 2347. From Newtown, Sydney, he was a 22-year-old labourer when he enlisted on 7 July 1915 at the age of 22. He served in the 5/26 Battalion on the Western Front, and was severely gassed in August 1916. In May 1918 he caught syphilis from a prostitute in Birmingham, received treatment and was discharged from medical care. He returned to Australia in 1919.
Physical Description
The bag is made from sand-coloured woven fabric. There is a flap that folds over the top of the bag and is closed using two woven straps through two metal buckles. The back of the bag has two metal buckles for attaching to a belt or strap. There are two loops sewn into the bottom of the bag. There are inscriptions printed in black ink, partly faded, inside and on the flap as well as the rear.
