Summary

Poster titled Freedom and Full Rights for all Refugees' issued by the Refugee Action Collective for the Tampa anniversary rally held on Friday 26 August 2005.

The Refugee Action Collective grew out of a national grassroots protest movement in response to the treatment of refugees and mandatory detention. First established in 2000, it gained momentum during the Tampa crisis in August 2001. This poster illustrates the ongoing significance of the Tampa crisis as a symbol of the refugee debate and its continuing resonance.

In August 2001, over 430 mainly Afghani and Iraqi asylum-seekers bound for Australia were rescued from a sinking ferry in international waters by the Norwegian freighter, the Tampa. The Tampa was prevented from disembarking the asylum-seekers on Australian territory. The Australian Government argued that they should have been disembarked in Indonesia. The resulting diplomatic stalemate between Australia, Norway and Indonesia was only solved when Nauru and New Zealand agreed to process the asylum-seekers. Some have since been accepted as refugees.
