Summary
Sheet produced in Tasmania by Tattersalls to provide information about the various sweeps that it was organising in conjunction with the running of the 1930 Melbourne Cup. It also contains brief information about the sweeps organised in relation to other significant horse races in Australia, including the Caulfield Cup.
Physical Description
A rectangular sheet of light brown paper with extensive black and red ink printing on both sides. On the front is information about the various sweeps that Tattersalls were running in 1930, whilst on the back is a list of rules and regulations in regards to entering the sweep. At some stage the sheet has been folded into eighths.
Significance
The 1930 Melbourne Cup Synopsis is a rare surviving piece of ephemera related to Phar Lap's only successful Melbourne Cup campaign. Currently the collection contains only a program and a mounted presentation photograph related to this important race. It is also one of the few pieces in the collection related to the gambling industry, particularly in relation the Phar Lap.
Phar Lap's position as the yardstick for the Australian Racing Industry is still true today, as was the case during the successful 2005 Melbourne Cup campaign of the horse Makybe Diva.
