Summary

Waterloo Medal (Specimen) awarded to A.T. Cunningham, Driver, Royal Horse Artillery, 1815.
A specimen of the medal with mount and ribbon, this piece was acquired by the Melbourne Branch of the Royal Mint form London to exhibit at the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition. It was also shown at the 1888 Exhibition.

The British Waterloo medal was the first medal to be awarded to all present at one or more of the following battles: Ligny - 16 June, Quartre Bas - 16 June or Waterloo - 18 June. All soldiers were also credited with two years extra service.

Physical Description

Silver medal bearing on the obverse, a laureate head of the Prince Regent facing left; around, GEORGE P. REGENT below the neck in small letters, T. WYON JUN. S., the artist's name. The reverse features Victory seated on a pedestal with her wings spread holding a palm branch in her right hand and olive branch in her left. The pedestal is set on a block inscribed WATERLOO; around above, WELLINGTON in exergue JUNE 18 1815. The edge is impressed in large roman capitals: A T. CUNNINGHAM, DRIVER, ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY

Obverse Description
