Summary
East and West Africa Medal 1887-1900 awarded to Pte. Beto, service number 1029, W.A.R. (West Africa Regiment) with ribbon and Bar SIERRA LEONE 1898-99.
This medal, which is almost identical to the Ashanti Medal of 1873-4, was authorised on 1 November 1892. Those who had been awarded the Ashanti medal were given additional bars and not awarded the East and West Africa Medal 1887-1900.
The bar SIERRA LEONE 1898-99 was awarded for the 'Hut Tax' war.
Obverse Description
Diademed head of Queen Victoria facing left, around, 'VICTORIA REGINA' and on the neck truncation the artist's name, 'L.C. WYON'.
Reverse Description
Scene of fighting in a forest between the Ashanti army and the advancing British forces. Design by Sir Edward Pointer.
Edge Description
Stamped; '1029 PTE. BETO W.A.R.'.
