Summary
1914 Star medal (Specimen). An un-issued example of the Star medal with bar.
This medal was approved in 1917 to be awarded to those who had served in France or Belgium between 5 August 1914 and midnight 22-23 November 1914. Those who had been under fire received a bar bearing these dates. These included those who took part in the retreat from Mons, which has led to this medal being given the nick-name the 'Mons Star'.
A similar medal, the 1914-15 Star, was more commonly issued, but no service person could receive both awards.
