Physical Description
A round bronze medal (36 mm diameter) with mount and ribbon. The obverse features a bare head of George V facing left; around, GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN; REX ET IND: IMP; the artist's initials, B.M. (Bertram MacKennal) on the neck truncation. The reverse depicts a merchant navy ship ploughing through rough seas with a sinking submarine and sailing ship in the background on the right; in exergue, FOR . WAR . SERVICE MERCANTILE . MARINE . 1914 - 1918 .The edge is impressed: E. BERRY. AUSTRALIA . 538 .
