This medal was instituted in 1923 as an army general service medal excluding service in India, East, West and Central Africa. It was never issued without a bar to indicate the campaign it was awarded for.

Physical Description

A silver medal with broken mount, ribbon and bar IRAQ. The obverse features a bare head of King George V facing left; around, GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:; the artist's initials B.M. (Bertram MacKennal) are on the neck truncation. The reverse depicts Britannia as Victory - helmeted and holding a trident in left hand, winged and extending a laurel wreath in right over a pair of wings set about a radiant globe above an inverted sword; the artist's initials E.CR.P. (E. Carter Preston) above the groundline to left of Britannia. The edge is impressed 276200 DVR. C.J. COOK. R.A.
