This was one of a series of Colonial Forces medals instituted on 31 May 1895 for the Colony of Queensland for NCOs of the rank sergeant and above for distinguished or meritorious service. The award was superceded in 1902 by the Commonwealth of Australia MSM.
Physical Description
A Royal Mint specimen round silver medal (36 mm. diameter) without mount and ribbon. The obverse features a diademed head of Queen Victoria, facing left; around, VICTORIA REGINA; the artist's name W.WYON R.A. on the bust truncation. The reverse has the legend FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE within a laurel wreath and below a crown; above the crown, SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
