Summary

Military Breast Badge (MBE) for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was founded by George V in June 1917 for service in the British Empire other than those given by the armed forces (although it could be conferred upon members of the armed forces for services of a non-combatant nature). In 1918 a military division was introduced for service in military action for officers and warrant officers. There were five classes: Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GBE), Knight or Dame Commander (KBE), Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE) and Member (MBE).

Obverse Description

A cross patonce in silver gilt, a gilt crown and loop suspender for ribbon. The obverse medallion at the centre of the cross features Britannia seated facing right with left arm extended over the sea, from which in the background the sun has risen; in her right hand she holds a trident; around, FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE.

Reverse Description

The reverse has the royal cypher GRI below a crown at the centre surrounded by a rope border.
