Summary

Decoration of Royal Red Cross, George V, 1st Class. The medal is stored in its original Garrard & Co. black box with 'R.R.C. 1ST CLASS' printed in gold on the lid.

This decoration was instituted by Queen Victoria on 27 April 1883 in response to the increased role of nurses in military campaigns. It was available to women, British or foreign, for exceptional service in the field of naval or military nursing (it became available to male nurses in 1977). Until 1915 there was only one class, but in that year a second class, the Associate Royal Red Cross, was introduced.
