Summary
Air Force Cross, George V, Royal Mint un-issued specimen medal.
The AFC was instituted in June 1918 for officers and warrant officers in respect of acts of gallantry while on non-operational duties or for meritorious service on flying duties. In 1993 it became available to all ranks but is now only awarded for gallantry in the air.
Obverse Description
A silver cross with arms made of thunderbolts, the top arm ends with a loop to which is attached a silver ribbon suspender bar decorated with laurel with diagonally striped crimson and white ribbon. The arms of the cross are decorated with propeller blades with one letter of the Royal cypher GVRI at each end; a central circular medallion depicts Hermes, standing on the back of a hawk which is flying to the right, bestowing a laurel wreath.
Reverse Description
The reverse has the Royal cypher GRI and the date 1918, the cross is plain.
