Summary

Distinguished Service Medal - George V, Royal Mint specimen medal (without mount for ribbon), 1914-1937.

The D.S.M. was instituted on 14 October 1914 as a gallantry medal for petty officers and ratings of the Royal Navy, NCO's and other ranks of the Royal Marines and others holding corresponding ranks in naval forces. This award was abolished in 1993.

Physical Description

A round silver medal (36 mm diameter) without mount for ribbon. The obverse features a bust of George V wearing admiral's uniform, head bare, facing left; around, GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:; the artist's initials B.M. (Bertram MacKennal) are on the bust truncation. The reverse has the legend FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE within a laurel wreath with crown at top. Plain edge.
