Summary

Distinguished Flying Medal, George V, 1st. Issue. Royal Mint specimen (with mount for ribbon), 1918-1930.
The D.F.M. was instituted on 3 June 1918 "for acts of valour, courage and devotion to duty" and was available to non-commissioned officers and men.
It is equivalent to the Distinguished Service Medal (D.S.M.) for acts of valour at sea, the Military Medal (M.M.) for acts of valour on land and the Air Force Medal (A.F.M.).

Physical Description

An oval shaped silver medal wit mount for ribbon. The obverse features the bare head of George V facing left; around, GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:; the artist's initials B.M (Bertram Mackennal) are on the neck truncation. The reverse depicts Athena Nike winged and helmeted seated facing left on the engine of an aircraft; her right hand is extended and a hawk rises from it; in field, FOR COURAGE. The edge is plain.
