Silver Air Force Medal, George V 1st Issue. Royal Mint specimen with mount for ribbon, 1918-1930.

The A.F.M. was instituted on 3 June 1918 "for acts of valour, courage and devotion to duty" when not in active operations against an enemy; and was available to non-commissioned officers and men.

Oval shaped silver medal with mount for ribbon.

Obverse Description

A crowned bust of George V facing left; around, GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP: ; the artist's initials B.M (Bertram Mackennal) are on the neck truncation.

Reverse Description

The reverse depicts Hermes, naked but for cape and winged cap, standing on the back of a hawk flying to right; his right hand is extended in the act of bestowing a laurel wreath, The artist's initials E.CR.P. (E. Carter Preston) in the field below the hawk.

Edge Description

The edge is plain.
