The medal was awarded to volunteers or militia men who have 'been either under fire, or attached to Her Majesty's Imperial Forces' during the several wars between the New Zealand Government and Maoris who were opposing seizure of Maori land and breaches of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi. The most extensive conflicts occurred during the 1860s, when there were as many as 14,000 British troops, comprising 9,000 Imperial troops and over 4,000 colonial troops, including many from Australia.

Silver dated medal with mount and ribbon. The obverse features a diademed bust of Queen Victoria facing left with veil, around, 'VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG: F:D:'; the artists names, 'J.S. & A.B. WYON' weakly struck below bust. The reverse features a laurel wreath around the dates '1861 TO 1866'; around above, 'NEW ZEALAND', around below 'VIRTUTIS HONOR'. The edge indented 'J. KINGSLEY 1ST. WAIKATO REGT.'.
