Presentation fob given (in memoriam) to Pte. James Edward Reilly, service number 923, 51st Battalion, A.I.F., from the residents of Lancefield, Victoria, honouring his service in World War I.

James Edward Reilly was born in Lancefield, Victoria. He was a labourer when he joined at Echuca on 9 July 1915, aged 24 years and 10 months. Reilly arrived in Marseilles in June 1916. On 3 September 1916 he was missing in action in France. It was later confirmed he had been killed in action. Reilly was buried in an isolated grave, three quarters of a mile east of Thiepval and subsequently exhumed and reinterred in a war grave. His medals were sent to his father, William Reilly [Riley], in Lancefield.

Physical Description

A round nine carat gold fob with loop and attached ring for suspension. The obverse features a pair of crossed rifles set on a shield, engraved around: THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 18. The reverse of the medal is engraved TO J. REILLY In Memoriam; around, PRESENTED BY RESIDENTS OF LANCEFIELD
