Colonel Hall was born in Kerang, Victoria. He was an accountant when he joined on18 August 1914, aged 19 years and 9 months.
In October 1914, he embarked for active service as a Corporal in the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance. On 9 May 1915 he was serving in Gallipoli and by August 1915 he was promoted to Sergeant. Hall was posted to the Imperial Camel Corps in July 1916 in Palestine. He was then transferred from the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance to the 3rd Anzac Camel Battalion in November 1916.
In April 1918 he was made Temporay Captain in the Imperial Camel Brigade and by July 1918 he was Staff Captain of the 5th Light Horse Brigade. In September 1918, Hall was Staff Captain in France and by May 1919 he was ADC to General Chauvel in London.
Colonel Hall returned to Australia in July 1919 and his appointment was terminated on 14 January 1920.
In 1929 he resided at 386 Lower Malvern Rd, East Malvern and records show in 1967 he sent a letter applying for his Anzac medal.
The 1914-15 Star was authorised in 1918 to be awarded to those who saw service between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915 (excluding those who were eligible for the 1914 Star) - 2,350,000 were issued.
Physical Description
Bronze four point star medal 'ensigned' by a crown. Ribbon is striped in the three colours of the Empire which are shaded and watered.
Obverse Description
Four pointed star with the top point replaced by a crown with attached loop and ribbon, crossed swords project between the points of the star and at the centre, within an oak wreath, a scroll crossing the swords reads '1914-15'; at the base of the wreath is a large 'G' which encloses a 'V' (King George V).
Reverse Description
Stamped; '63 L/SJT. J.R. HALL. 1 / L.H.F. AMB. A.I.F.'.
