The World War I medals are replacements. According to the British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, they were issued on 1 August 1956. They include in order: Military Medal 1914 (for bravery in battle on land), 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal and War Medal 1939-1945.
During World War I Clarke served in the British Army, in the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment, 7th Battalion (Doncaster). The Regiment raised 23 Battalions.
Clarke lived in the town of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, England. The 1/7th Battalion was located in Doncaster in November 1914 for five months, and Clarke may have joined then.
The Military Medal was awarded to Clarke for 'acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire or for individual or associated acts of bravery' (Gazette issue no. 31405, date 13/06/1919, page 7673).
