Summary

War medal, Great Britain, 1945. One of a group of five medals awarded to Corporal William John Clarke, who served in both World Wars I and II - Military Medal, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal and War Medal 1939-1945.

During World War I, Clarke served in the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment, 7th Battalion (Doncaster), service number 328001. The Regiment raised 23 Battalions. During World War II his service number was S212443.

This medal was awarded to all full-time personnel who served more than 28 days or more in both operational and non-operational areas.

A cupro nickel medal with ribbon mounted in a group of eight medals. The obverse features a crowned head of King Geirge VI facing left with the artist's initials PM in the field below the neck; around, GEORGIVS VI G: BR: OMN: REX ET INDIAE IMP: The reverse has a lion standing facing left on a fallen dragon with two heads; above, 1939 1945; the artist's initials E.CR.P. (E. Carter Preston) in the field to left. The edge is impressed in capitals: S212443 W.J. CLARKE
