Summary

Small coloured jigsaw on thick cardboard, headed 'Walt Disney's Donald Duck / to the Salvage Department'. The images shows a heavily laden Donald Duck, carrying guns, a tyre, and a bundle of old newspapers, with a verse encouraging people to donate waste material to the war effort.

One of several World War II-era jigsaws from a single donor. The donor remembers doing these jigsaws in Perth during World War II, circa 1940-1945. His father was away overseas on active service. In his family's living room, there was a gap between the lino and the skirting board, and he made up the jigsaws and they remained nestled in this gap on the floor for some time.

Physical Description

Small coloured jigsaw on thick cardboard, headed 'Walt Disney's Donald Duck / to the Salvage Department'. The images shows a heavily laden Donald Duck, carrying guns, a tyre, and a bundle of old newspapers, with a verse encouraging people to donate waste material to the war effort. The verse reads: 'Here comes Donald with pots and pans/ and paper and boxes and . /To give to the local salvage man/ To win the war we need your aid/ so join at once a [illeg] Brigade.' There are four pieces missing.

Significance

The images on these jigsaws indicate aspects of patriotism in Australia during World War II, and the ways that the messages about Australia's war involvement were being presented to young children.
