Summary
This original watercolour of Masked Lapwings, Vanellus miles novaehollandiae, by Neville HP Cayley, depicts two adults with their young. In 1892 when Cayley painted this work, the species was commonly known as the Spur-winged Plover, Vanellus novaehollandiae.
Cayley, the father of the acclaimed Australian wildlife artist Neville William Cayley, was one of the best known Australian bird artists in the late nineteenth century. Cayley is most notably remembered for his contributions to scientific papers and publications such as North's 'Nests and Eggs of Birds found breeding in Australia and Tasmania' (1889). He also painted game birds, and as such, was the preferred artist for the hunting fraternity.
