Summary
Poster promoting the 4th Annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sports Awards. The Awards were established to pay tribute to the contribution of Aboriginal men and women to Australian and international sport. The featured photograph was taken during an AFL match between St Kilda and Collingwood at Victoria Park on 17 April 1993. Throughout the game, St Kilda's Aboriginal players were racially taunted by some Collingwood supporters. At the end of the game, St Kilda midfielder Nicky Winmar lifted his guernsey and pointed proudly at his skin. This spontaneous gesture became a powerful symbol of Indigenous pride and a statement about the problem of racism in sport.
