Summary
Book titled 'Old Times in the Bush of Australia: Trials and Experiences of Early Bush Life in Victoria, During the Forties' written by James Kirby, published by Geo. Robertson & Co, 1895, and printed by James Curtis, Ballarat. The title page of the book notes that it was 'Written at the expressed wish of His Excellency the Governor, Lord Hopetoun, and presented to him by the writer'. It also states that the author was 'one of the earliest (if not the earliest) bush pioneers, of the colony of Victoria, now living'.
In June 1899 Sir John Mclntyre presented to the Legislative Assembly from Mr James Kirby, of Minyip, asking for a grant of money in recognition of his labours as one of the few remaining 'bush pioneers' whose explorations helped to open up the interior of Victoria, and pave the way for settlement in the remote parts of the colony.
