Summary
Photograph taken during a workshop at the 1998 Ouyen Women on Farms Gathering. The workshop was titled 'Tension and Relaxation' and gave women the opportunity to learn about massage technique. Over the weekend twenty-five workshops were held covering a large range of subjects, from practical farm skills to relaxation. For many women, nurturing workshops such as this relaxation workshop offered a welcome distraction from the stresses at home: 'At home we had no money, no rain and almost no hope', wrote participant Valerie Colbert in a 2004 reflection, 'but I was loved by everyone at the Gathering like a sister'.
Part of Museums Victoria's Invisible Farmer Project Collection. The Invisible Farmer Project was the largest ever study of Australian women on the land, uncovering the histories and stories of Australian women in agriculture. It began as a pilot project (2015-2016) and evolved into a three year (2017-2020) nation-wide partnership between rural communities, academic, government and cultural organisations, funded by the Australian Research Council.the absence of rural women in mainstream histories and museums.
