Summary

This model of a traditional Malayan Tonkang cargo boat has a single mast with rounded bow and square stern. It was exhibited at the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1 October 1880 - 30 April 1881. The model is of rough manufacture, made from unvarnished and unstained very light wood, possibly teak. There is a large calico sail, not attached. Main part of boat is made from single piece of wood, with benches and masts slotted in afterwards. There are three small metal loops inserted into wood, one at centre of bow and two on either side of stern, with small pieces of twine still attached to loop at the bow and one loop at the stern. Possibly for the mast but could also hold the model up while on display at the Exhibition. This model was donated to the Museum by the Straits Settlement Commissioners in 1881.
