Summary
Issued by the Young Chinese League, Melbourne to Samuel (David) Louey Gung as proof of membership for 1946-1947. Samuel was born in Carlton in 1920 to Chinese parents. At a young age he travelled to China with his family where he remained to finish his education and marry. In 1947 he returned to Melbourne with his wife and two children. The Gung family collection documents their experiences of immigrating and living in Australia from the 1920s to the 1960s and the gradual easing of the White Australia policy.
The Young Chinese League was created from an amalgamation of Chinese Progress Association and the Chinese Athletics Association. The organisation was formally established on 4 October 1932 with M.H. (Mee How) Ah Mouy as President, B. Moyling as Vice-President, C. (Claude) Wing Kee as Secretary and H. Nam as Treasurer. F.A. (Frank) Chinn, G. Lau, N. Wong Hee, G. Yee, Miss D. Chung and Miss L.
