Summary
Portable typewriter, one of the first items purchased by Claire French (nee Wieser), in Australia after she migrated with her family from Germany in 1951. She purchased it with money she earned fruit picking in Nuriootpa, a German settlement, in South Australia. It is very precious to Claire, as she typed her first stories on it. The Wieser family's migration experience, is one of statelessness and displacement, both during World War II and afterwards, and of continual movement and fracturing of the family upon their arrival in Australia.
This is a portable typewriter of the type-bar class, manufactured by the Oliver Typewriter Company of England. An instruction manual is clipped to the inside of the typewriter case lid.
Physical Description
Oliver typewriter, black with detachable cover and handle. Instructions manual attached to the inside of the cover. Red and black typewriter ribbon still in place. An instruction manual is clipped to the inside of the typewriter case lid.
