Although he was of German ethnicity, growing up and living in South Tyrol meant Heinrich's citizenship was unclear, considered an Italian citizen prior to World War II after the war he was alternately considered to have Italian and German citizenship. Heinrich found it difficult to settle in Australia and moved to Papua New Guinea before returning to South Tyrol in 1958.
