Summary

Colour poster promoting air shows at Hendon Aerodrome in Northern London and encouraging spectators to travel there via the London Underground Railway system. Illustrated by Tony Sarg (1880-1942) and printed by Johnson, Riddle & Co, London, 1914.

Physical Description

Rectangular poster with colour printing on matte paper. Printed blue and white text along lower edge framed by a red and yellow border. Poster features a detailed cartoon scene, viewed from above, depicting a large group of spectators behind a fenced area, watching an air show. People are seated in rows of chairs directly behind the fence whilst others stand near by. Behind them, are two parked motor vehicles with their roofs folded down, containing more jovial spectators. A biplane, with several photographers and onlookers near by, is visible at the top of the scene. A green two-storey building beside a raised Union Jack Flag is situated to the left and a brass band is visible in the lower right corner. Printed signature of artist and date in lower right corner. Poster has canvas backing that is also visible along the top and bottom edges.

Significance

Hendon was established in the early 1900s and was both a civil aerodrome as well as a Royal Air Force (RAF) Station. It also became a popular place for spectators to view air displays and by 1912, the First Aerial Derby was held there, attracting huge crowds.
