Summary
Miniature model of a three-masted three-decked British naval ship of the mid 17th-century, HMS Sovereign of the Seas, launched at Woolwich in 1637.
Sovereign of the Seas was designed by Phineas Pett by order of King Charles I as the first warship to carry 100 guns although it was modified after launch to carry only 90 guns. The ship was unwieldy and was later re-named Royal Sovereign. The ship took part in three major actions, first against the Dutch and then against the French fleet. In 1697 the ship was destroyed in a fire while laid up at Chatham.
