Summary
Memorial Cross medal issued by Canada to the family of Pte. J. Kay, service number 148542, circa 1920.
The Memorial Cross (more often referred to as the Silver Cross) was first instituted by Order-in-Council 2374, dated December 1, 1919. It was awarded to mothers and widows (next of kin) of Canadian soldiers who died on active duty or whose death was consequently attributed to such duty.
Obverse Description
Cross shaped silver medal with loop at top, a laurel wreath between the arms; a crown above the top arm of the cross and a maple leaf at the end of the other arms; at the centre the royal cypher GRI with the ends of the letter I extended and formed into small crosses.
Reverse Description
The reverse is engraved : 148542 PTE. J. KAY
