Summary

Street sign salvaged by Marie Owen (nee Hayes) circa 1958. Marie had lived at 42 Cumberland Place, a timber house during the 1920s and 1930s. It was built by her grandparents in the 1850s.

Marie's recollection of exactly when the street sign was salvaged is a little hazy, but she vividly remembers removing it one Sunday after she and her husband had been to church at St Joseph's. Apparently it was literally hanging-on to the wall of the building on the corner of Cumberland Place and McCormac Place by one nail.

Marie presented this street sign to the museum at the opening of The Melbourne Story exhibition on 19 March 2008.
